I don't know if this should be in this forum topic or "Water Cooler". Maybe neither.

You all remember the song/dance - "You put your right foot in, you put your right foot out..."

Almost always when I'm instructed to remove a section from a project; e.g. "Delete vinyl windows, we're using fiberglass." I move that section to a sub-folder I name Culls. When the estimating is done, I'm told that vinyl windows are to be used. I just move that section back to the folder for the project spec.

I've had to employ this many times. Before I archive the project, I look for sections that were custom in both the project spec and culls folders and save them for future reference.

I maintain similar folders myself, taking care to save any custom creations that didn't make it to construction. I tend to use the labeling of the folder to release various demons and make use of parts of my brain that spec writing often under utilizes. Poking through recent projects I have used:
Parts Department
The Safe House
Waste Bin
Surplus Materials
The Odd This and That
Scraps of History
Hope Chest
Dust Bin
Holding Tank
Hidden Surprises
The Dead Zone
Questionable Goods
Shallow Grave
Field of Dreams
Mysterious Strangers
Cloverfield
Leftovers
Guantanamo
The Quiet Room
Junk Yard
Holding Cell
Dark Mysteries That May Resurface
Dark Matter
Lost and Found
The Pool of Despond
Where the Wild Things Go
Essentially, find the folder with a name that corresponds to no known CSI/AIA naming convention and you are most likely there.

I simply rename the section with "(not used)" in front. This sorts the section out of the ones that start with the CSI section number.

I was really happy when Deltek/Avitru incorporated the ability to inactivate a section in e-SPECS for precisely this reason. I can mark a section as inactive and leave it in the project without needing to delete it entirely. If it comes back at some point, it's simply reactivated and I can continue from where I left off.
