Bill of Rights
The following, as an individual, and perhaps consensus expression of a few, constitute the more obvious Bill of Rights applicable for specifications writers, specifically [as individuals, consultants, and in-house employees]-- local office restraints notwithstanding]:
1. The right to be included as a member of the design team from inception of the project;
2. The right to collect, or receive pertinent project information concurrent with project drawing production;
3. The right to ensure correct servicing of employer and project by careful research and other methods to ensure quality and verifiable information and correct application;
4. The right to disagree with some approaches, uses and other aspects of materials, systems and devices in the project construction that are questionable, inadequate or improper;
5. The right to maintain the formatting of the Project Manual consistent with the principles of CSI, but with modifications thereto as appropriate to office standards, specifics of the practice, and to maintain continuity within the Project Manual;
6. The right to be studious, careful, meticulous, accurate and complete in all aspect of work;
7. The right to contribute nomenclature, and wording on both drawings and specifications that are consistent, interrelate, and industry acceptable;
8. The right to ensure the correct legal posture of the content of the specifications, and other documents included in the Project Manual;
9. The right to utilize some work time to mentor, explain, assist, and teach others in the office [or as requested outside the office] in the understanding of the intent, content and development of construction specifications;
10. The right to maintain personal development and updating in specifications writing [beneficial to employers and clients] through support for personal education time and efforts, meetings, gatherings, organizational team work, conferences, etc.
This piece comes out of the July 4th holiday that is coming up. It is intended to merely be a reminder of the variety of rights that we have as specifications writers [and each profession and trade has to itself], but also of the many rights we, all have in addition.
Have a SAFE, and fun 4th with your family!
But please remember and understand where the day comes from; respect
it; understand it; explain it to your younger family members and use it as
a measure for this day and era. It may well be that those fellows in powdered
wigs were not all that wrong!!
They just may have given us both what we need now, as a nation,
and what we really need to return to today. Among the many things
they gave use, they gave us dignity and uniqueness. And that has
served and shown well since the bells tolled on that day in 1776!
