THE ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY
by Ralph Liebing, RA, CSI, CDT
Cincinnati, OH

We’ve got to do it!

We’ve got to better and more fully understand “the Absolute Certainty”, what it means, and how it works. In addition, we MUST teach it early, explain it, reinforce it, and DO IT!!!

We must aggressively [in the “good” sense] get with the “certainty” and ensure that all of our peers in specification writing and in the allied disciplines are in line with us-- shoulder to shoulder, correct in concept and serious about the situation.

We must remove ourselves from any semblance of an elitist group or profession, from the perception of “All-knowing” and from looking down our reading glasses at the others. Our leadership comes in a strong resolve about the issues and how a better involvement in those issues by all parties will produce better projects and with far less stress.

Currently, we may be speaking from a position that in reality is weak. We do not see it this way, but we also may be a tad biased by the work we do, the butts we save, the energy we expend, and the inherent knowledge we impose unbeknownst to others. We “warriors in the shadows” [I like that!] need to have a breakout, and while we-- at least some-- are war worn, weary, experienced [notice I didn’t say, “older”!!] we really need a rookie breakout year; two-thousand rushing yards, 30 TD passes, 70 homers, 99.9% archery bulls eyes, a miniscule time leg swimming butterfly-- OK, a ten-strike!

The chart attached shows the linkage of the three aspects of documents and their enforcement, and the overall creation-- in the dotted circle-- of the absolute certainty. That certainty needs to pervade every project, not in an egotistic manner, but in one of strength of conviction, skill of development and confidence in all parties. Flatly, this is the “line in the sand”!

We create our documents and we will not put up with any-- that is ANY!!!!!-- diminution of them through error, manipulation, provoked or unprovoked abstinence, or through short-cutting or other profit making efforts. Our clients has been made aware of what we have done and what is included in the project, and is willing to pay for that both drawn and written-- period, no discussion.

The strength of the documentation must be and usually is supported by a program of firm but fair contract administration, which we can expect to "rag” us, as much as we rag the drafters, and the managers. In a good spirit [that of a quality project]—the collective effort works, and works well. The problem is there; is too much discussion, too many attempts to modify in a willful manner the basic project for purposes other than increased quality.

The “absolute certainty" is there to flat-out stop such efforts! The certainty is NOT the weakest link; it is, indeed, the strongest link.

Hear ye, Hear ye! We proclaim the foregoing to all those who hear and all those who are impacted by our projects and our professional efforts. Our claim is NOT one of superiority or supremacy, but it is one of correct, studious, analytic, and careful design, with proper documentation in both drawn and written instruments.

Hear ye, further! That collective effort coupled with astute contract administration is at work in our projects and will be the hallmark of the professional effort from this office.

With absolute certainty, we are united; we understand and we stand by our efforts, to the good of our clients and their projects.
