THE MORE THE MERRIER
by Ralph Liebing, RA, CSI, CDT

In the quest to provide the best information possible, using various resources, supporting data, and references is the best direction to take . Often in using a single source, we limit the purview of our work and allow the cynic to either dispute or discredit our work and conclusions. We don’t need to excuse” our work, but rather we do, need to create credentials for it and to otherwise substantiate it to show that we are not stating a single perspective or opinion.

A new CSI program based solely on CSI references will, more than likely, not necessarily have universal appeal throughout the construction industry. But collecting and incorporating other resources and viewpoints lends another dimension that indicates a more universal foundation and hence a greater appeal, industry wide. Many other organizations in the industry have their parochial documents that serve their constituents quite well. In that, any document or course of instruction, etc. produced by CSI must be formatted and written in broad and widely used data that augments other instruction.

This, of course, is a challenge for CSI, but one that will yield good returns and high prestige for the organization--- while also increasing its appeal and influence. The primary direction of the effort should be to educate and assist others in the industry, and not merely be another revenue-producing venture. This is the critical point of sincerity and credibility required for success. Also, CSI is uniquely positioned, with extensive and broad-based expertise, to provide the benefit of wider coverage and information beyond that provided by single-interest organizations.

Most assuredly, CSI information and documents are high quality and based on sound principles and axioms. But it would seem by adding other sources of information, CSI can incorporate other viewpoints, opinions and approaches to widen the impact of the products in question. None of us know “all there is to know”, but part of a more universal approach to education in the construction industry is to expand the information using the broadest range of information, techniques, and knowledge. In this, comes the basic rationale and appeal of the new documents, etc.

Although undergirded by the CSI expertise, marketing of documents industry-wide necessitates new direction[s] and the portrayal of the products in industry-wide terms. Preference may be given to some degree to CSI as the base agency but the marketing, distribution and fundamental are strongly CSI’s-- tempered and augmented by other expertise of other resources. This is important, since the new effort, in total, cannot simply be “thrown out there” without strong, and pertinent sales efforts and advertising-- they should be easy to find; easy to acquire; and easy to use [correctly] to achieve the basic knowledge, information and educational value intended.

Exciting times! Lots new to do! Challenging work. Find your place and join in!
After all-- The More The Merrier!!!
