120711 UNIQUE -- IMPOSSIBLE by Ralph Liebing, RA, CSI, CDT Cincinnati, OH Since CSI appears to be entering the rarified air of new and innovative programs [the Building Technology effort] we need to retune our mind set so failure is not the first thing that comes to mind. Of course the venture needs a reasonable, rational, and carefully crafted start, like any similar venture, but we also need to embrace the idea that a unique solution is NOT impossible! This problem, in my eye is a program quite distinctive and something for which there are massive resources, expressions, opinions, and offers of help-- here though, what is set as the goal is so different and innovative that all of us must adopt an open and flexible mind. It is really the highly unusual and different aspects of the problem which "forces" a unique solution The problem we aim to resolve involves a most exceptional problem in dire need of resolution, through the understanding cooperation and adjustment of several agencies. Many minds will need to be changed or modified to take a long-lingering problem and apply new technology to resolve the issue-- i.e., old problem and new solution. AND the hope is that those of the gwe tried that and it didn't work ilk will abandon that theme and offer their expertise. This is no effort to mount a "railroading" of a solution, but rather is a full and open plea for all members [and others] to express their concerns, their experiences and their perspectives. In the little time since the project announcement it is amazing at the number of people who have commented-- these in addition to those who have expressed their understanding and support in the past. We wonder both at the number of people who know of and agree about this problem-- and have something of value to add! Strip off your current experienced specifer or representative cloak and think of the basic, elementary information you wish you had had at the beginning of your career--- then share it with the Task Team. Patience and indulgence is asked! This is a long term project with many aspects to be set and resolved among CSI ad other agencies within the construction community. This is chance upgrade a sorely remiss situation and provide a better atmosphere for all of us. EVERYONE is invited to submit experiences or information or resources. Do that everyone-- don't be shy and don't hesitate for any reason. All information and perspectives are important! |
