MORE AWARDS
by Ralph Liebing, RA, CSI,CDT
Cincinnati, OH

I’m thinking we need more awards, medals, citations and insignias! The thought is not to demean our awards, but to heighten our visibility and take note of more of our members for day-by-day work and effort. We need to be more visible-- like daily in our offices! I foresee no Specifications Day parades; but we could bedazzle in the city of CONSTRUCT0000, in showy regalia.!

First, the Specifications Purple Project Manual awarded for those bruised, sued, or disputed. Repeat events would add a small crutch to the original medal.

The Specifications Cross to those who “cross” many barriers and write good specifications in spite of all odds.

The Specifications Service Medal to those who merely survive for an extraordinary period of time. And the “Average Joe/Jane Award” for some with fewer years, but a good future!

Combat Writer’s Badge to those who not only survived but had to fight it out all the time.

The Specifier’s Hammurabi Award for those who write, speak appropriately and comply with the codes.

The Magenta Badge of Courage, with clutched PowerPoint slides, to those who dare to present webinars

Bronze Star to those who overcame client reluctance and produced a good spec.

Silver Star to those who produced a good spec in spite of client reluctance

Medal of Honor has me stuck—not sure just what criterion to implement here [will get back to you]

Unit citation to the well-performing specifications department of a major design firm

Chevrons will be moved from the small metal CSI pin to those embroidery arm-sewn displays of pointed chevrons and rockers [points up] in some very eye-catching colors. Also, epaulets, collar brass, “combat” leader bands, Re-up bars to those who continue and continue and never care to retire [sew from elbow down on arm]

Rather than spoiling a shirt or shirts, I foresee the use of large sash-like [that’s a wide ribbon, not the operable part of a window] like the Boy Scouts use for Merit Badges. Or a vest-like garment similar to what the Girl Scout Brownies use-- portable and usable with any outfit at any time.

We also award Good Conduct; Perfect Attendance; Most Adorable [awarded only once per person-- you don't keep getting cuter!]; The Next Most Likely to Succeed; etc., much like our high school yearbooks.

And, let’s see???? What can we do to recognize someone with the Smart A__ __ award-- [well, maybe not since we ALL know who they are!!!!]

Speakers should be shown more respect than that the BLACK ribbon!!!! For goodness sake, they are not undertakers!!! Actually in most cases this should be some bright, glitzy, spectacular colored ribbon—and I am not so sure they should not be given academic robes for their presentations!

Really each of us deserve an interim award until our real reward is awarded, So below is a declaration you can pin up in your cube until then! Salute!!!

I AM A PRETTY VERY GOOD SPECIFICATIONS WRITER BY ANY CRITERIA.

Awards like those suggested could be fun, especially at some of the more serious award ceremonies. Each chapter should have one award that makes everyone laugh!

And of course, a lot of those mentioned are all too serious when it comes to survival of the fittest spec writer.

I think there also needs to be a "maintaining reasonable temperment and humor in face of totally ridiculous deadlines."

(and in my day, the Girl Scouts DID have a sash for their badges. The CampFire Girls had the vests with beads. Do CampFire Girls exist anymore?)

You're right. It's only since sometime in the 80's or so that Junior and Cadet Girl Scouts went to the vests.
I still have my sash with all my badges, pins (even my Brownie pin and World Association pin) and chevrons (like my fly-up one).
