POP QUIZ ! by Ralph Liebing, RA, CSI, CDT Cincinnati, OH OK, this HAD to happen eventually! For design professionals, specifiers, consultants, student/co-ops, interns, and recent graduates, those nearer retirement and all manufacturers’ representatives, the following questions about the associated detail need answers, Come on, try it yourself and then ”administer” the quiz to your colleagues in the office. Reps, you can use any or all of your product lines, as you wish. The purpose of this is just a fun object lesson to illustrate how minute [yet essential] things can get. And more importantly how many rather well conceived drawings still lack information by raising questions of both intent and “how-to”. Obviously these details are from different sources, with the “J-Detail” from a constructed facility in south central Kentucky [I ran the job as On-site Rep]; and pure concoction sourced the other. BUT both show differing points of problems and need some thought for “correct” or sound construction concepts and work-- that is, did the drafter, in the office, think the detail all the way through and understand how the work was to be done [by textbook solution or field experience, or both combined], Did he realize what was missing and how his concept was not fully accomplished? Have a little fun with this! Hey, why not gather a gang of staffers with you, during noon hour, to really discuss both of these details, solutions and ramifications and see who knows what [not to embarrass, but to inform] and what conclusion come out that work—or that do not work!!!! Hope you really do this and with others really enjoy the discussion. Love to hear your comments!
