100602 I DON’T THINK I BELONG HERE! by Ralph Liebing, RA, CSI, CDT Cincinnati, OH Just took a quick look-see through the “Best of Joy Davis” photos from the CONSTRUCT 2010. I was not in one photo and you know what-- that's good and appropriate because, I don’t think I belong in that group nor perhaps in CSI! The photos amazingly show people with a dedication and level of expertise that shines through so very, very well-- and quite clearly. And the supportive look and pride of their spouses is the same way! Funny, I was at the show [well, as sort of a phantom, really] on a quick in, quick out basis, but never really saw these groups of folks there. To me, all the good of CSI was caught on film-- errr, digitally! in Ms. Davis’ collection. The dedication, experience and expertise among the group are imposing to me, and such that I can never-- ever-- come close matching. These folks know what the devil they’re doing and do it with grace, style and high quality-- you might sya they “ooze” all those qualities, it is that apparent! They have almost literally put their lives into the work, and dedicated their efforts to the “cause”. They deserve the respect, applause and esteem given them. I was thoroughly impressed! Which leads me to be even firmer in my resolve that I do not belong there, or in CSI? I have no time to dedicate; I don’t do evening meetings; I have old stuff that no one really cares about, so let the youngsters do it; I more than likely [but clear to me] have missed my calling-- but even then I am not sure that I can come anywhere equal to what I see in photos and the few people I have met in CSI over the last few years. I’m a by-stander; an outsider; a member, period!; nothing really behind all that to make any sort of impression. I have quirky ideas that rightly deserve no attention, and will never see the light of day as CSI moves forward. Oh, well, it’s fun thinking about things and expressing some ideas, while hopefully not offending or bothering any one too much. May be the fat lady hasn’t sung yet, but I think she's at least is in the wings and ready to step on stage! But maybe there's one or two curtain calls remaining. Some of that old stuff still has relevance; those youngsters still have lots to learn. And maybe attending meetings isn't the only way to pass on the years – decades! – of attained knowledge and learning stored in this ol' noggin. I can certainly continue to write books and columns, to bug all you out there to think about what you're doing, and to be that irritant in the oyster (the pearl!) – that wakens the sleepy and the complacent and jars them into awareness! So don't leave the theater yet! There's life in the ol' boy and he's got more to say. Break a leg! By the way, if, for whatever reason you decide to take a picture of me-- there is NO good side!!! Sincere thanks to the very kind, young lady and CSI “do-it-all” in Milwaukee, who penned the two thoughts just above my last line! |
