091125 HELLO! ANY EMERGING PROFESSIONALS OUT THERE? by Ralph Liebing, RA, CSI, CDT Cincinnati, OH To use police jargon [which I am sure you all know nothing about!] this is an all-points bulletin [APB] for “Emerging Professionals”-- i.e., those folks who were identified by Past CSI President Hu as, "those young, post college, new-to-the-business” . OK! We might even give some leeway to those close to this, but still in school, or those closely associated who have an interest. But, ‘EMERGING PROFESSIONALS!!!!!! WHERE ARE YOU???? There is even an outlet on CSI Forums strictly for interchanges and discussions between EPs, and with CSI members of other vintages. Why is this Forum sitting there so benignly as to have but 2 responses to a recent inquiry and nothing else? Folks, communication, discussion, even arguments are two-way streets-- you give or ask a little and you’ll get [I guarantee you!] pertinent response. You see there are around 14,000 CSI members and others outside the organization who are chomping at the bit to state their opinions, offer their help and pump their products, techniques and other “good stuff”. There are many many older members willing to share and give over valuable information and experiences [and some great!!! war stories] if you but ask. Are you interested? Some? Little? A Lot? Whatever—we are interested in your and more particular what we can do to assist you in your professional development and work. There is no initiation fee, or hazing! We openly accept you as colleagues, and are willing to make you a better professional who will better serve your clientele. We can make you an expert [with time] over time with great programs, documents, webinars, and yes, again the Forum. But, WHERE ARE YOU? Please don’t be shy! There is no such thing as a dumb question, so don’t be embarrassed [some of the “dumber” questions come from older members, and quite frequently!!!]. How about this-- e-mail the author of this piece [rliebing@hixson-inc.com] to be added to the Emerging Professionals list. I will pass this along to the right folks for return responses, answers to questions, and general information of value to you. Just offering an opportunity-- try it, you’re liable to like it and find some value. CSI Members-- we need your help too. If you have some EPs on staff, please encourage them to become involved, even if they are staunchly “design oriented”. Every exposure to, and understanding they have about specifications and CSI will benefit them perhaps in ways they do not realize. You can inkle membership, certification, etc. when the time is right, BUT first let’s get them on board with exposure to the EP program and what it can yield, early education to orient them and get them to speed, and then to full CSIdom for those so inclined . Plant seeds first, then we can nurture and advise as the need and level of interest increases. EVERY Emerging Professional is in need of this approach. Whether they actually write specification ever again, is irrelevant-- their understanding of the process and content, respect for, ability to read and utilize them are of utmost importance ! You and yours have a very nice Thanksgiving! |
