THE SPEC WRITERS’ JOKE ! [with moral]
by Ralph Liebing, RA, CSI, CDT
Cincinnati, OH

This has got to be the epitome of spec writer jokes-- complete with a very telling moral;

The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After they got their tent all set up, both men fell sound asleep.
Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says,
“'Kimosabe, look towards the sky; what do you see?”

The Lone Ranger replies, “I see millions of stars.”

“What does that tell you?” asked Tonto.

The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says;
“Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies;
Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning;
Theologically, the Lord is all powerful, and we are small and insignificant;
Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.
What does it tell you, Tonto?”

Tonto replied, 'You’re dumber than a buffalo. Somebody stole our tent”.

Ouch! But then don’t we all, from time to time stretch to find things, when the obvious is right before us? We overlook the normal, the routine, the simple, and willingly jump to unwarranted conclusions, complete with reasonable rhetoric! We like to make mountains out of molehills!

Does this apply directly to us, in our work? You bet! As those looked upon quite often for insight, a more educated guess, or flat-out word of experience, we, too, think, do, say, and offer ideas, solutions and explanations that just don’t fit or apply. We make something complicated out of something so common and routine, and just don't see the obvious. At times we need to be humbled in some way, so we stay the course with the soundest of information, and none of the fantasized “visions” of seemingly greater things that just don’t apply.

Athletes [even the computer type!] are taught to stay within themselves-- don’t try to make a play or something out of nothing, when an obvious and simple outcome stands right there. Check the easiest, forthright, simple-- and blatantly obvious before wondering off into cosmic “spectovision”.
