090909 SPEC FOR THE DAY ! by Ralph Liebing, RA, CSI, Cincinnati, OH On the special day, coming Friday this week, we specifications writers should be checking our flags at home and office—and our flagpole and flag specifications—beefing them up to make better ! It’s the least we can do! Wouldn’t it be great if we could automatically spec a flag and pole on every one of our projects-- that we had a clientele so dedicated that they EXPECTED that to happen, in lieu of value engineering it or seeing it as a “maintenance problem”, or one that offended some worker. How about this as the start of the spec: A good, high quality long lasting flag, able to weather ANY circumstance or challenge of weather, abuse, mutilation, or attack—ALWAYS THERE, 24/7. Then add what you wish from the following checklist for better quality: non-fading fabric; embroidered/appliqué stars; strong stitching; reinforced headers; brass grommets; metal thimbles…….; Customize as you like, but with more quality, impact, and striking display-- bold eagle staff terminal, gold fringe, etc.-- no wimpy stuff! Then a good strong, HIGH pole; sturdy, resilient to full display and complement the flag and make a statement! Just keep the day-- 9/11-- in mind, along with all the dates in history you can recall where this banner did its job simply to inspire troops, and to represent decency, quality, strength and compassion. From small flags in the hands of youngsters to the mammoth banners on the highest buildings, and with salutes to and by vets, remembrances of all those who cannot salute, and those in the wrong place at the wrong time, make it your simple statement of what the U.S. flag-- not should-- but MUST be! Let’s NEVER-- EVER—forget! Let it NEVER happen again. Your spec maybe a small issue in your mind, but added one upon one--think what we have! God Bless America! |
