Random question, but we have a water tower on our site and we are doing a bit of master planning. Where would you start looking for minimum separation distances required. tower

Random response: if it falls over it would be nice for it not to fall on the building(s). I'd start with a large circle underneath it. just kidding but not really.

Do you mean for fire separation distances for buildings on a single lot?

If so, per IBC, you would classify the water tower as Use U - Utility (for sheds, towers, and other not-typically-occupied structures), and then go from there.

I presume the water utility has easements in place that may help identify some limitations. A quick call may help you identify other restrictions and limitations.

To follow up on Ken's note - do you have a survey yet? There are likely also easements for the water lines coming in and going out. Possible servitude for the water company to service the tower.

If you are concerned with the water tower falling over then you should be concerned about the building on the site falling over. If properly designed the two structures would have a comparable likelihood of falling over.

Sorry for not responding. We have contacted the town and they were going to reach out to the utility company. We currently don't have survey.
