I need help from my brick buddies! A reviewer has requested "a note for "no figuring" in brick bond if brick color has variation." I've not come across the term "figuring" in describing brick. Please explain. |

I have never heard of that term before. I suppose it could mean a mason writing his/her initials in a wall with all dark brick or something like that. I don't think this would be very common and if I were the architect, I would just reject the wall. Of course, it would be important to have a sample panel or mock-up to compare the blending to that was approved. |

Detroit brick masons thought it was pretty funny to arrange dark flashed brick in a happy face figure high up on a new building at Northern Michigan University in Marquette. The university president was not amused. It got redone. Phil Kabza FCSI CCS AIA SpecGuy Specifications Consultants www.SpecGuy.com phil@specguy.com |

I love that answer Phil! I happened to mention this to a young engineer from Germany last week. He noted that there, when brick or masonry is insulated, they "tag" the brick with a yellow tag to ID where the insulation is located for the Architect review on site. Never heard of this before, but would explain why "Mr Brick" Trimble hasn't heard of it either. |
