We are trying to get everything vinyl out of our specs and the issue of vinyl drywall trim keeps coming up. We specify metal trims and vinyl trim is routinely submitted here in California usually with a comment like "It's the industry standard." One Contractor said metal trim is no longer available. Is anyone else having this experience? |

I have not noticed that. I typically specify USG Sheetrock paper-faced metal trims. All metal is to rigid and will cause cracking in the thick joint treatment compound under an impact. The joint filler will fall off and expose the metal. The paper-faced metal is more forgiving. |

I'm with Wayne on this one. Much fewer call-backs. |

John, I typically specify paper-faced metal trims too. Maybe it's a regional thing for California? Since when does 'industry standard' overrule the project manual? When you're talking about removing hazardous chemicals from your projects, you want a higher standard. Let's call industry standard, like the building code, a minimum requirement or the lowest common denominator. BTW, for vinyl in your GWB section, look also at the joint compounds. I have used both National Gypsum and USG on Living Building Challenge projects, so they're knowledgeable about this already. - |

Thanks to all. We have been specifying metal but accepting paper-faced in submittals. I'm going to include paper-faced going forward - thanks Wayne, Ken & Lisa. I've never specified vinyl trims but they continue to be submitted (and rejected) so I thought I'd check with the larger community to see if I was simply out of step. I told one of my younger colleagues, that I tend to translate "Industry Standard" in this context to mean "we want to do it this way." |

Taking a quick look at a local Lowes: Vinyl corner bead, 1-1/4 by 10 foot length @ $4.48; nail or staple in place, then mud. Similar metal CB: $4.98 (nail/staple & mud) Similar paper-faced: $6.58 (no fasteners, install with gyp compound) Industry standard = Less expensive I guess if you change your phone number, you don't get call backs. |
