I heard rumors that PPG was bought up by another company and fired its CEO. I also heard that PPG is selling off its architectural paint line and concentrating on high-performance, industrial, and marine coatings. Does anyone know anything more about this major shake up? David, The answer to that would be ‘yes’ to the sale of its architectural coatings line, here is a link to the article I saw on this, and it names the group that is buying them. The sale is not final, it is expected to close by early 2025. https://news.ppg.com/press-releases/press-release-details/2024/PPG-reaches-agreement-to-sell-architectural-coatings-U.S.-and-Canada-business-to-American-Industrial-Partners-announces-comprehensive-cost-reduction-program/default.aspx William C. How long before "American Industrial Partners" takes them into bankruptcy? So many companies are being bought up by private equity, gutted, and then bankruptcy is declared. |

It’s hard to say if this will happen, but the other path to demise is like what happened to Boeing. Stayed in business but real quality got sacrificed high returns on stock for investors removing high paid technicians in charge of product inspection/coordination. William C. The architectural coatings space is quite crowded and as they said in the PR, low margin as compared with industrial coatings. Great old brand though, it is a shame to see it fall into the hands of PE. |

Crowded?! By whom? There are only two paint manufacturers in the Pacific Northwest for commercial projects (PPG and Sherwin-Williams). Benjamin Moore has a presence in the Portland area but not the Seattle area. I have never seen Pratt and Lambert out here. Kelly Moore had a big presence until they went out of business. For smaller multi-family projects, I will allow Rodda and Miller Paint. Lowes carries Valspar (Sherwin Williams). Home Depot carries Behr and Glidden (PPG). I remember a time when my paint specifications had about eight different manufacturers! David G. Axt, CDT, CCS, CSI, SCIP Specifications Consultant Axt Consulting LLC |

David, I remember the time of many manufacturers as well. But I think the crowded has to do with different regions. There are a lot of truly local brands, and brands that like many products are produced perhaps by a major manufacturer but branded for a store brand, or for a regional only supplier. I have seen contraction of that, but its interesting going into some smaller hardware stores and seeing strange brands of paint I have never heard of. William C. Here in the mid-west (or maybe on one of the coasts, not sure where exactly I recognize the name(s) from), I have heard of Diamond Vogel, Hallman Lindsay, and True Value. (True Value is a hardware store, like Ace) However, I have not heard of some of the ones checked, like Miller. |

I looked at some of them, and a number of them have VERY limited products available. And because I am procrastinating, I checked out some of them: Beauti-Tone is Canadian. Hallman Lindsay's site says: Paint made in Wisconsin for Wisconsin since 1956. Hirschfield's is apparently paint made in Minnesota for Minnesota. Micca Paint is another Canadian company. O'Leary is a family-owned Michigan company, and seems to be mostly just in Michigan. Richard's Paint is another family-owned company with stores mostly in the east cost, and a LOT of stores in Florida. They actually have a broad range of coatings. They might be worth a second look... Vista is a California company. |

I overlooked Mercury: They are in NY and serve the greater New York City Metropolitan Area. However... They apparently signed a long-term exclusive manufacturing and distribution agreement with PPG Paints. |

Well, that explains why I recognized Hallman Lindsay. (I'm also procrastinating). I'm also not familiar with Dunn-Edwards. When I wrote my specifications, I used PPG, Benjamin Moore, and Sherwin Williams. I didn't use the MPI, but did qualify the products to ensure they were comparable and the top of the line, quite often residential instead of commercial. It was explained to me that residential paints had to stand up to cleaning more frequently than commercial paints which usually got repainted rather than cleaned. |
