Looking for an elevator consultant for design input and specification section authoring, preferably on the East Coast. Any tips?

I worked on several products with Lerch Bates, though that was more than 10 years ago. They know their stuff, but they has some semi-wonky specs. Formatting and language of lower-level paragraphs was not good, and coordination of their sections with Div 01 and Gen Cond needed work. That may be better now, but I'd have a conversation about deliverables early.

It sounds like they are the kind of consultant who thinks they are providing bidding documents. Like theater consultants!

I have used Lerch Bates on many projects with overall good experiences. They have always provided good quality specifications, formatted to whatever standard/template I gave them.

Lerch Bates usually provides good elevator design.
VDA https://vdassoc.com/offices/washington-dc/ is also quite good.

Either way, if you have a template you like to work with I'd provide that and ask them to use it as a starting point. I would also give them a list of your Division 01 Sections and suggest that they reference those instead of rewriting.

Your other option is to ask them for a copy of their template when you sign the contract and mark it up long before deadlines hit.

James Lawrence & Associates did the elevator design on a couple projects I was involved with several years ago. I'm not sure if he's still in business, or if he's retired by now. He's in Glen Allen, near Richmond, VA.
