It is for a project in Belize, so I guess Polynesian would be most appropriate. Ron Geren, FCSI Lifetime Member, AIA, CCS, CCCA, CSC, SCIP

Go to the Old Key Lime House in Lantana, FL - https://www.oldkeylimehouse.com/. It's down the street from the last CSI MSR venue. They've had to replace their thatched roofs so many times that they have a step-by-step display in their lobby on how to build one based on actual experience. I knew I should have taken more photos of that! BTW, their food isn't bad but their key lime pie really sucks. |

Thatch roofs have an especially high risk of igniting due to lightning, and Belize has a high lightning density. Contact me if you need more info. Michael Chusid, RA FCSI CCS 1-818-219-4937 www.chusid.com www.buildingproduct.guru |

"Shakespeare's Globe had to have special permission to have a thatched roof – there has been a law against thatched buildings in London since the Great Fire..." https://www.shakespearesglobe.com/discover/shakespeares-world/the-third-globe/ Sorry, it's hard to pass up a rare opportunity to link Shakespeare to specifications.... |

As long as we have brought up Shakespeare on a friday afternoon, One of the first specifications I ever studied was from a project called Macbeth: PART 1 - SCHEDULING Thrice and once, the hedge-pig whin'd. Harpier cries:—'tis time! 'tis time! Round about the caldron go; PART 2 - PRODUCTS AND MIXING In the poison'd entrails throw.— Toad, that under cold stone, Days and nights has thirty-one; Swelter'd venom sleeping got, Boil thou first i' the charmed pot! Fillet of a fenny snake, In the caldron boil and bake; Eye of newt, and toe of frog, Wool of bat, and tongue of dog, Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting, Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,— For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble. Scale of dragon; tooth of wolf; Witches' mummy; maw and gulf Of the ravin'd salt-sea shark; Root of hemlock digg'd i the dark; Liver of blaspheming Jew; Gall of goat, and slips of yew Sliver'd in the moon's eclipse; Nose of Turk, and Tartar's lips; Finger of birth-strangled babe Ditch-deliver'd by a drab,— Make the gruel thick and slab: Add thereto a tiger's chaudron, For the ingrediants of our caldron. Cool it with a baboon's blood, Then the charm is firm and good. PART 3 - EXECUTION Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and caldron bubble. Ron, When I was in Belize, a long, long time ago, the locals said to cut materials for a new thatch roof at a particular time in the lunar cycle or you would attract vermin to the roof. Maybe you also need to say prayers and leave a tribute. Yet another reason why construction takes longer in the tropics. If your Owner has a local connection, you should ask them. Everyone in Belize knows how to do it. If your Owner will be importing labor, I'm sure there are some very lovely synthetic prefabricated options. We wrote specs for a private island in the Caribbean several years ago. I think they imported prefab thatch roof kits from Bali. Yup that still sounds ridiculous. - |

If in Belize be sure to specify Royal Palm fronds. I lived there for a number of years and we built a few structures with thatched roofing and the recommended material for durability is the Royal Palm harvested around a full moon. (More moisture in the frond at the full moon and this time of harvest makes a difference)We didn't have specifications at the time but worked with local user knowledge.
