I had to write a coin operated dog spa equipment spec a whiles back. If you think it would help I'll see if I still have it somewhere in the depths of my computer. |

I would approach this like a residential appliances specification noting the power and plumbing requirements and the particular required features like capacity (how many Snickers bars can it hold). The trick will be avoiding a closed specification if that is an issue. |

Can you consider a design-build vendor approach with a service contract? Who fills in the contents and otherwise maintains it? Technically, the appliance approach is probably the closest. |

You'll want to reference NSF/ANSI 25 at a minimum. For a 50% submittal, an outline spec with that standard called out and additional information as James Sandoz suggests above should be enough. When expanding from outline to full section, look for language you can crib from Div 10 & 11 sections. |

The ever curious spec mind wants to know what they want vended in their vending machines. Run of the mill candy, chips and soft drinks? Or something special, perhaps all healthy vegan stuff? Be forewarned that I have seen things in sidewalk vending machines in Japan that are illegal in many US states. The most mundane will sell you a fifth of Johnny Walker red. |

What Phil said. I am sure that is what many I have worked with believe about specifications. I feel like I should have a coin slot (credit card slot these days) in my forehead. |

Phil, I guess you did not run afoul of, first a Houston now Texas institution, Spec's Liquor Warehouse. It was founded in 1962 by Carroll "Spec" Jackson and his wife Carolynn. The company logo is a rabbit wearing spectacles (or specs). It is where I do the great majority of my holiday shopping for adult relatives and friends. Most stores also have an array of gourmet foods. I have to admit I become a bit offended when the fruit of my labor is diminished by being referred to as "specs" instead of specifications. I guess it is emblematic of the low regard some people seem to have for the work. They don't understand it so it must not be that important. They sure do remember my phone number when they have a question though. I don't recall ever hearing or seeing the graphic part of construction documentation referred to as "draws." |
