New ASTM Standard for Mock-ups

Following is from press release: ASTM International construction standard supports architectural mockup programs Construction of new buildings, particularly large complex buildings with intricate facades, will have a mockup built to simulate a portion of the facade and components for the building, noted Eric Peterson, ASTM International member and a principal at WDP & Associates Consulting Engineers. “This mockup not only permits the architect to visualize what the final building façade will look like, it permits an opportunity to work through challenging details, evaluate interfacing conditions and perform testing of the building façade before it is constructed on the building,” Peterson said. “This standard provides valuable information to the specifier for the development of the mockup program including best practices for the design, construction, and testing of these systems.” Peterson explained that the new standard would be of primary use to architects, but will also have valuable information for all members of the construction team, including owners, constructors and testing agencies. This effort by ASTM is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #13 on climate action. The standard helps in the creation of building envelopes that are energy-efficient and high-performing, and can reduce both energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. I think I had a couple of comments to make during the drafting process, but not many. It is a higher level look at mock-ups and their purpose and therefore is very broad. I haven't looked at it in its final form, but this is a good document to make sure that the reason for mockups is fully explored by the design team. Brett Scarfino (Unregistered Guest) Unregistered guest Posted on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 - 02:03 pm:    AAMA (now FGIA) has a host of documents on mockups, be it selection, methods of test, how/what needs to be specified, etc. They even offer a "laboratory testing bundle", which should have a good majority of the tests one might want conducted on a lab mockup. Curtain wall mockups are not uncommon, and its also not uncommon for opaque wall elements to be included. Just wondering if the goal is to overlap AAMA to some degree, or will there be an entire suite of new ASTM tests for mockups? Or maybe this is intended to address "parking lot mockups", which are now on practically every job? J. Peter Jordan Senior Member Username: jpjordan Post Number: 1145 Registered: 05-2004 Posted on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 - 03:54 pm:    I have specified integrated exterior mockups for more than ten years now, and MasterSpec has now incorporated language for such items into a Division 01 "Mockups" section (includes room mockups and mockups for lab testing). This will typically include the exterior finishes (masonry, metal panels, stucco, etc.) as well as fenestration. The mockups can be "stepped" to show the various "layers" of construction and can be used for testing. Such mockups go beyond the scope of an AAMA testing, and I usually refer to the individual specification sections for testing. Will be interested to see how this shakes out. J. Creating project specific BECx specs is interesting and E2813 is very helpful in terms of understanding what is recommended for fundamental and enhanced enclosure commissioning testing at mockups and in-situ Work.
