I'm working on some specification sections for products that are typical for Passive House projects. Where do you like to specify the following items:
Structural Thermal Breaks, like Armatherm or Fabreeka.
Sill Sealer Gaskets. I'd like to put them in one place regardless of wood or metal wall framing.

I have created a separate section for the structural thermal breaks.

The sill sealer gaskets are accessories for the framing materials (wood or steel).

Peter, where have you located structural thermal breaks? We're leaning toward 072160.

My first thought is to put the thermal breaks in div 05 as an accessory to the steel framing..

If in Div 07, consider
07 90 00 Joint Protection

consider proposing an upddate to Masterformat..

Where are you using the thermal breaks?
Some conditions I've seen include connection of balcony and canopy framing to wall structure and at roof anchor connections. I've typically included the spec for roof anchors in Division 07, for canopy attachment in Division 08 if part of the curtain wall assembly, and Division 05 otherwise. I've never used a separate Section. Where possible I try to get Structural to specify it and include connections in their shop drawing requirements since it is a structural issue and failure is not an acceptable alternative.

Michael, why 079000? I hadn't thought of that at all.

Ken, the location of thermal breaks could be anywhere between Div 05, 06, 07, and 08, sometimes at more than one location for each project.

Many of our PHIUS multifamily housing projects are podium style construction, with concrete, steel, and wood framing. That's why I'm trying to make one section that will be easy for everyone to find. If our structural engineer wants to own it, then I have no problem with it. As an independent specifier, I have no control over what structural wants to do. Structural engineering firm standards vary widely.

Lisa, thanks for asking.

07 90 00 - Joint Protection

The thermal break is in a joint between structural members or materials. It provides protection against thermal transmission (and vibration?).

More specifically, 07 91 16 Joint Gaskets

This may seem odd because "joint" can be linear and the thermal break being discussed is more of a "point" joint. But it still works.

Let us know what you decide.

Being too lazy to write a new section (actually it would have been my 3rd new section on this project), I just threw structural thermal breaks into the board and block insulation section.

Dan,
I feel your pain. That's why I'm taking this time to really think about where things should live in the specifications. I also worry about tossing PH-things into random places, where the contractors may not see them, although I have done that too.
I'm leaning towards putting sill sealer gaskets into Section 072700 Air Barriers.

Specifiers don't build buildings; contractors and tradespeople do. Therefore, another variable to throw into the debate is when and where and by whom is the product used. We place glazing sealants in Glazing. We often place EIFS system joint sealants in the EIFS section. Back in my rough Rough Carpenter career, the sill sealer was delivered with the framing package. And if it wasn't stolen, the sill sealer was put in place by the carpenters immediately before setting the framing. So another location to consider is to treat it as an accessory in the wall framing or wall panel section.
