Once upon a time, ladder cages were in the same MasterSpec section as ladders, which was 055000 - Metal Fabrications. But now that there are no more ladder cages...

I know that SpecLink has put the fall arrest system in 118129 - Facility Fall Protection. (Ladder Safety Systems; Climbing Ladder Fall Arrest System.)

My question is: Where has MasterSpec added this? In with the ladders in Metal Fabrications, or in Division 11? Or somewhere else entirely?

Thank you very much!

Hi Loretta, From what I can see, Masterspec hasn't added it. We are not on Speclink, but our firm uses 118129 - Facility Fall Protection.

Thankyou, Gail!

Does anyone know where it is in SpecPoint? As part of Metal Fabrications or Facility Fall Protection?

Hi Loretta, I think the removal of the ladder safety cages language stems from code changes. In the past few years OSHA 1910.28 was revised to no longer accept cages and wells as fall protection for fixed ladders over 24 feet.

The current requirement is to have a "personal fall arrest system or a ladder safety system". This suggests products such as this: https://caisafety.com/product/ladder-rigid-track-fall-arrest/

Thank you. I understand that. I am just curious in which section Deltek / MasterSpec / SpecPoint has included the new requirement for a fall arrest system.

When I was using MasterSpec, I had added it in Metal Fabrications as part of the ladder article. When switching to SpecLink, I noticed that it is in the Division 11 section, Facility Fall Protection.

We have a client that uses MasterSpec, and I just wondered where the new-ish (almost six year old) requirement was added / included in the Deltek
/MasterSpec / SpecPoint corpus.

Thank you!

I like to have it in both places. Keep it in 055000 with the ladders, if you have ladders, but no other fall protection on your project.
Keep a separate section in Div 11 for other (roof) related fall protection and maintenance items, like davits, railings, lifelines, etc. You can use the 118000 - Facility Maintenance and Operations Equipment category for that and choose your own number, e.g. 118129 - Facility Fall Protection.

As Gail said there is apparently no sign of it in MasterSpec. I didn't see it in either Division looking at the Q4 2023 update.

Like Alex, for most projects where we only need fall protection at ladders, I include it in 05 50 00. Where we need full-scale fall protection systems like davits, roof tie-offs, and other items I use Division 11 though I have used 05 50 00 to include roof tie-offs and ladder fall protection if that is all we need. I still require delegated design in that case. I prefer 05 50 00 to ensure everything gets anchored through to a structural member. I like to include thermal break material with the tie-offs but that sometimes becomes an argument with Structural Engineers.

Thanks. That is what I have been doing for our other projects. Even though SpecLink has the fall arrest system for ladders in Division 11, I copy the article and add it to 055133 Metal Ladders. I will also do that for the client criteria specs we have.
