what is "intermediate review" submitt...

I have been looking for an explanation of what an "intermediate review" is and have come up empty-handed thus far. Also, I was a project architect for 15 years and am unable to think of a time 'intermediate submittal' came up on a project or was something I requested from a contractor - unless we called it by another name in the office. So I wanted to ask here to see if anyone has sources for information or readings to suggest. Thanks. What's strange to me is that there seems to be no definition of what an "intermediate review" is - or what it would be for - in a project's submittal process.
