For a private college project, the Owner wants to cut existing trees that need to be removed for new construction. Landscape Architect will identify trees on their existing drawings but will not prepare a spec. Trees will be felled and rough milled on site. The resulting (milled and dried) wood will be used for interior millwork per Division 06, probably on this project, maybe elsewhere on campus. This has been done on some of my other projects, but I haven't prepared a section for it. It just happened. I'm thinking Section 021013 Selective Cutting and Milling of Existing Trees. That would fall likely fall under an Earthwork trade contract. We've had this occur on other projects but outside of our specifications; not a bad idea to address as LEED and other criteria are resulting in this happening more often. The shop millwork would then be handled in the usual Division 06 sections. Unfortunately I am no longer with the architectural firm so I do not have access to that section. On my project the new school was located on a wooded area. The contract made a deal with the owner to remove and mill the trees in exchange for keeping the logs/lumber that was not used on the project. I did not see the numbers but obviously the contract made a tidy profit. The milled lumber was mixed species and was used as decorative wall paneling in various spots on the school. David G. Did they throw out all the old proposals? There aren't any updates listed after 2020 and the link for status on submitted proposals is gone. (I submitted two a few years back. I have yet to confirm that the old data has been preserved; however, since my involvement as CSI's SME on standards two years ago, I have been receiving and preserving the proposals I have received. One of the goals of this new CSI standards development process is to be consistent and transparent. Although proposals can be submitted throughout the intervening period between publications, the review and approval process will be on a cycle, which the Standards Steering Committee will establish. MF will stay on the two-year cycle for the time being. OmniClass and UniFormat had no development cycles, but that will be changed. We are focusing on MF at this time for two reasons: (1) We are overdue for an update, and (2) we are using this process as a test run to work out problems and establish best practices. Be on the lookout for the call for proposals and for a call for volunteers to participate in the MF Maintenance Task Team.
