We have an initiative to create a corporate librarian position for our 1,200 person firm, which would include maintaining our Standards and Reference Library. Two companies we are aware of, IHS Market and TechStreet, are web-based providers of reference standard documents such as ASTM, NFPA, etc. Would like to obtain opinions on these or other such service providers.

I recall it being somewhat tedious if you need to obtain a standards as a PDF, because you need to request them individually by email from someone who runs MADCAD. Works great if you're content with mainly just looking at them online and you only occasionally need a PDF.

Alex,
The ASTM standards (the ones referenced in the building codes) are part of the MADCAD subscription available to SCIP members.

In my experience, it can take a little bit of time for new members to get log-in privileges from SCIP, but once you have those privileges, it is easy to access the standards.

I usually only view the standards on my computer, but I just now checked and once signed in, I am able to "print" to PDF from the website. It's worth noting that when I do that it adds a copyright notice to the PDF that the document is copyright protected and 'SCIP' is the entity licensed to use/print it, and that further distribution is not allowed.

Access to the ASTM standards is a great SCIP member benefit.

Can SCIP members opt out of being included in the SCIP membership list that is available to the public online? Is there a way to be visible to other SCIP members but not the general public?

I don't know how SCIP does things but I recall with CSI the member list was available only to other members, but leaders' info was public and couldn't be opted out. I know people whose contact info was frequently used in spear phishing attacks. I'm not inclined to be involved with leadership because of this, and unsure even about membership, because privacy is very important to me. Maybe I'm the weirdo in the room and most people want to be listed to develop contacts for more business, I just can't see how to avoid the increasingly believable spear-phishing while being online very much at all. I might be able to do CSINext.

x3 on MadCAD. Combined with UpCodes, they have completely eliminated our hardcopy collections.
