Need more information regarding the context. It is likely that they are asking for evidence that the product possesses certain characteristics. The exact nature of the certification is likely specific to the type of product. |

I used to work for a firm that requested a certification from every manufacturer that the product was appropriate for the use indicated. When We did not always get it (wonder why?). When I pointed out to one of the principals that it was our job to select appropriate products, this requirement went away. As Mark notes, this should be a product specific requirement, usually in conjunction with certain performance requirements. J. Peter Jordan, FCSI, AIA, CCS, LEED AP, SCIP

Product certification is required when you ask for it. It can be useful when there is some greater risk that the product provided may not meet the specifications. Things that can contribute to the increase risk are: non-proprietary specifications, products or assemblies of higher complexity, long construction durations where products may change in the time after they're specified, public bidding environments, and the like. It's use is best considered separately for each section, not necessarily project-wide.3 |
