I have an interior design friend with a question regarding the projection of a light fixture above a sink: "I am working a commercial job and can’t find the definitive answer to the question of lighting above a sink where ADA requirements is involved. I know that in a hallway projection cannot be more than 4”, but does this also apply to above a sink? I have all these books, but no final judgment. I want to replace the lighting just above the sink am I constrained to 4” projection?" Can one of you code geeks respond to Kathy's question? Thanks Margaret |

Section 307 of the 2010 ADA Standards addresses protruding objects limits objects that protrude horizontally into the circulation path to 4 inches. Since the light fixture above the lavatory is not in the circulation path, the 4-inch limitation does not apply. Ron Geren, AIA, CSI, CCS, CCCA, SCIP www.specsandcodes.com |

Thanks Ron. You confirmed what I thought was the correct answer. |
