Joy Davis sent news of the passing of Bob Johnson:

https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10205886130011108&id=1194326049&set=a.1332596153680.2050572.1194326049

Regular readers here are well aware of Bob's contributions to CSI. For those who aren't, search for and read some of his posts on this forum. Note that often in contentious discussions, his is the final word.

In short, Bob was the authority. Moreover, he was a great friend. He will be missed.

This is a tough weekend; I just was informed this morning by John Regener, that Tom Heineman had passed away last summer. Two icons of the Institute, whose experience, and prudent and sagacious advice will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, old friends.

Paul Tom Heineman was an old friend and mentor who I had the pleasure of working with many times. His Obit from the Miami Herald follows:
HEINEMAN, PAUL T. Architect, teacher, writer, and lover of mathematics, the outdoors, and discussing the issues during extended happy hours, died on July 28, 2014 of a brain tumor, at the age of 84. Tom was born and raised in California until age 9, then spent many years in New England, and Baltimore before coming to Miami in 1978 to help design Metrorail. A celebration of his life will be held at Olympia Heights United Methodist Church 3801 SW 97 Ave, Miami, FL 33165, on Sat. August 23, 2014 at 11am.

Jerome suggested a Specifier Memorial section on the forum to remember those who have contributed to our community. See below in the CSI area.

Perhaps expanding it to include others is appropriate. Suggestions please.

If you edit your profile after logging in you can be sent postings in this area and other areas of interest - hint.

So sorry to hear about Bob Johnson. He was someone I never got to meet in person, but who influenced me nevertheless (via email and his comments on my blog posts).

While we all understand death is a natural extension of life, we grieve the loss of loved ones, people with whom we have shared our experiences and joys. Bob and Tom will be missed and remembered. Perhaps that is the best memorial we can have - to be remembered.

Tom Heinemann was the director and primary instructor for a 2-week course on specifications and contracts at the University of Wisconsin that I took in 1984 or 1985, and was a major influence in my career. He used to refer to that course as the 'West Point of Specifications.' The Institute had nothing of the sort at that time. I had written specs since 1976, but in 1982 changed jobs and became a full-time specifier with the leading design firm in Cincinnati [my home city]. Tom's course was very helpful in learning my craft and I was able to take both the CDT and CCS exams on the same day the following spring and pass both.
