[duplicated from above - Colin] Joy Davis sent news of the passing of Bob Johnson: https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10205886130011108&id=1194326049&set=a.1332596153680.2050572.1194326049 Regular readers here are well aware of Bob's contributions to CSI. For those who aren't, search for and read some of his posts on this forum. Note that often in contentious discussions, his is the final word. In short, Bob was the authority. Moreover, he was a great friend. He will be missed. Colin Gilboy Publisher, 4specs.com 435.200.5775 - Utah 800.369.8008 |

Louis Medcalf, FCSI, CCS Tom Heinemann was the director and primary instructor for a 2-week course on specifications and contracts at the University of Wisconsin that I took in 1984 or 1985, and was a major influence in my career. He used to refer to that course as the 'West Point of Specifications.' The Institute had nothing of the sort at that time. I had written specs since 1976, but in 1982 changed jobs and became a full-time specifier with the leading design firm in Cincinnati [my home city]. Tom's course was very helpful in learning my craft and I was able to take both the CDT and CCS exams on the same day the following spring and pass both. Thanks for creating this Colin. I don't get to visit the Discussion Forum part of the site any more very often due to deadlines. While Bob was truly my mentor and boss for a number of years at RTKL, Tom was easily one of the kindest and most supportive people I've ever had the pleasure to know. Tom was the sort of person who could get you deeply involved in a task before you could even realize it. Spending time with him was an incredible treat. I think he could make mucking out stables fun. More than once I changed my plans when I knew he would be attending a function just so I could see him. Thankfully it never involved mucking out stables. If Bob was the soul of CSI, Tom was easily its heart. Both were great people who brought out the best in many of us. I pray we find others who can fill those shoes. They are missed. |

Ken I did not know you were close to Tom, he was a mentor to me as well, a good guy and a great specwriter. It seems many of Tom's colleagues did not know he had passed or perhaps they were just too busy, those deadlines will kill you. |

I didn't know about Tom until I just read it here today. I don't get out much any more. I hadn't seen him in a few years and last spoke with him about two years ago. Incredible how fast time goes by. What a sad reminder that we need to make time for what is really important. Funny, I only managed to go to CONSTRUCT for the better part of one day this year, and that's a lot better than I've been able to do for a few years now. I was able to combine that trip with a meeting with my new firm and a visit to my old doctor at Mercy. The fun never ends it seems. Thankfully all three events were worth attending. |
