To reduce costs we are specifying rubber floor base in lieu of turning up resinous flooring at tenant bathroom walls for a commercial project in Trinidad. Eons ago, my father was a flooring installer and he used to apply a bead of sealant at the bottom of the wall base to ensure a watertight seal, does anyone specify this?

I have seen that as a plan review comment for California hospitals reviewed by the state agency that issues hospital permits, OSHPD.

Yes we do.

1. Where coved base is installed against hard surface or resilient flooring, install a continuous bead of sealant under the toe of the base; ensure complete contact to exclude moisture between the floor and the base. Remove squeezeout with xylol, mineral spirits, or other solvent as recommended by the sealant manufacturer.
