Working on cabanas for a pool and the designer wants synthetic wood slats on the exterior with gaps of 1-2 inches between each slat. They currently have it detailed with painted cement board as the sheathing, but I don't know of any cement board that can be left exposed to the elements between the wood slats. Am trying to find a sheathing product that can go over the cement board and provide some level of weather resistance (keeping in mind, the "wood" slats will be nailed through it in many locations). The weather-tightness is not the primary concern (they are open on one side anyway as cabanas), but I am concerned about the durability of the sheathing that will be left exposed to UV (Vegas) and occasional rain.

Robin,

Rather than painted cementitious board I recommend painted Hardie panels (fiber-cement).

Robin, Here is a product that I have used successfully with open joint 2x wood slats.

Self-Adhering Vapor Permeable Air Barriers at Sidings or Cladding: Design is based on VaproShield WallShield UV-stabilized, self-adhering, self-sealing, and self-healing rubberized asphalt water-resistive barrier and rainscreen underlayment integrally bonded to polyethylene film, or equal.

I'd be really surprised if cement board wouldn't survive exterior exposure - the stuff is made to get wet, and is used in all sorts of harsh conditions. I wouldn't be surprised if it outlasts the fake wood. Concrete can easily be painted. Plus, it's a cabana, not the weather barrier in a museum, so the risks are low.

I have used and seen used ripped composite decking used as sleepers. Just make sure to get the solid stuff.
