Structural Steel columns were erected on a job site. The Structural Engineer failed to call for galvanizing, as was requested by Owner. The steel has been shop primed and is to be coated with an intumescent mastic and a Tnemec Paint system. Any Recommendations for galvanizing at this point? The project is a commercial building in South Florida. What would be most economical method to protect steel from corrosion? |

Economical? Best option I can think of will be to blast prep the steel (you'll probably need to do this anyway to get the intu to stick and meet UL). Confirm that the intu will warrant application over a zinc-rich primer and use whatever Tnemec (or whomever provides the system) tells you to use. I believe Tnemec goes with inorganic zinc-rich in these conditions. Carboline may be able to provide the entire system including intu. Any time you need protection after fabrication and can't galvanize for whatever reason, this may be your best option, even without topcoating. If possible, see if the primer can be electrostatically applied to make sure the entire surface gets protected. |
