Which ASTM number describes the test method for determining the light reflectance value (LRV) of paint materials? |

Lisa, Sorry I couldn't respond sooner, I was at Construct all week. The closest I could find is - ASTM C609 - 07 Standard Test Method for Measurement of Light Reflectance Value and Small Color Differences Between Pieces of Ceramic Tile |

Thanks, but I don't think that's what the paint manufacturers use for LRV testing. ASTM E 1477 is for LRV on acoustic panels too. Isn't there something specific for painted surfaces? I'm hoping to hear back from our painting reps. |

Lisa - I received the following from my Sherwin-Williams Rep.: ASTM D2244, “Standard Practice for Calculation of Color Tolerances and Color Differences from Instrumentally Measured Color Coordinates." |

One problem for architectural coatings (other than the high-performance types) is that the manufacturers don't like to share testing, even what standards they are testing to. I looked at the list of ASTM standards and specifications that the paint committee (or whatever they call themselves) is responsible for, and it's a lot. But good luck getting any of them to share it with you. What's your situation/problem that you're trying to solve? |

The Master Painter's Institute discusses ASTM method D 523 and how that applies to LRVs. http://www.paintinfo.com/mpi/approved/sheen.shtml Bruce Maine CDT LEED AP |

Thank you all for your help. Here's the longer story, my client is painting cellular PVC trims at the exterior which requires high LRV paints. The painter is using a different paint manufacturer than the one the Architect selected, so the custom mixed colors need to be tested for LRV. One manufacturer says: "We use the Y value (from Tristimulus XYZ values) for D65 10 illuminant for LRV, where the values are for standards that are read on a spectrophotometer with 0/45 (bidirectional) geometry. I don't know if there is an ASTM for that, but your customer should be able to understand the above." Second manufacturer says: Test with a nanometer scale; utilize the x, y, and z factors as a percentage of R. Yes, I think the Architect should go back and select from the pretested colors. - |
