Is anyone familiar with an industry standard for the horizontal location of a stand alone door pull (Rockwood 147L) on an exterior building entrance door? Contractor chose to mount the pull to the extreme edge on a pair of doors causing a potential finger pinch situation rather that centering the pull on the door stile which would have been more appropriate. I've looked at SDI and DHI publications,a dn manufacturer's literature, but haven't turned up any information that is relevent. |

I don't believe there is actually an industry standard (I will check with one of my AHC friends). In my 25 years of doing door and hardware details and specifications, I always dimensioned the backset in the details. |

I received the following from an AHC friend of mine: "the pull requires 1.5 inches clearance between the door and the pull and mount a minimum of 1.5 inches from the door edge or jamb when the door is closed. The 1.5 inches clearance on the pull is not stated anywhere so everyone uses the clearance that is stated for grab bars." Like I said, it needs to be detailed and should be indicsted on the shop drawings. Also, be careful using ultra narrow stile doors Straight pulls will not work in that situation and offset pulls become a maintenance issue because they are always loose. |
