Does anyone have a powder coating specification that they are willing to share? Or can you point me in the right direction? The Owner wants us to powder coat some guardrails with a faux weathered bronze look. Thanks! daxt@blrb.com |

David, I've never spec'd powder coating other than writing "powder coat: color to be determined" or maybe "color: chartreuse". Try checking with a plant that does powder coating, like Linetec - http://www.linetec.com/index.html They have guidelines and other information on their web site. |

David, it's important to realize that type of paint/coating is important whether powder-coating or painting. You can get just about everything in powder-coat that you can get in paint; polyester, acrylic, epoxy, urethane, PVDF... You can even get multiple coats, specific primers, etc. The same concerns exist such as UV, abrasion, and color retention. The possible benefit is that some coatings, such as PVDF, are touted as being harder when applied as powder coat than when applied as a liquid-coating. I'd agree with Lynn regarding Linetec or else contact Tiger Drylac http://www.tiger-coatings.us/ As to a 'faux weathered bronze look' you might want to be careful as metallics don't tend to work that well in powder-coat, at least for PVDF, from what I've seen so far. The fleck tends to 'stand up' and reflect better in a liquid application. That may be different when using a metallic urethane. Linetec and Tiger may be able to tell you what to reasonalbly expect. I would just include this as part of the guardrail spec. I'll see what I can dig up. |

I would add Jim Hester at Quality Powder Coating (http://www.qualitypowdercoating.com/) in Dallas to the mix. He is very knowledgable about the AAMA standards and what you can and can't do where with powder coatings. You are probably looking for a polyester, possibly a PVDF; stay from epoxies if this is an exterior application. |

David, I recently wrote a spec on this, but for some reason I have not been able to find it, I will keep looking. I did contact an aluminum finish fabricator who provided insight and spec info. I will email you his contact info and the spec section when I find it. |

A "faux weathered bronze look" sounds like a particular finish is already selected. Why not just make a proprietary spec? |
