I am looking into masters and find various notes and some confusion. Is this correct: SDI for standard hollow metal doors and frames and HMMA for custom hollow metal doors and frames. The specs I am going through seem to have a mixture of both. It seems to me that both allow for a "heavy duty" application and that the difference is in the availability of "custom" sizes with custom hollow metal/HMMA. If I do not have any custom sizes is standard/SDI referenced spec fine? (Use is educational.) Goals - 1) to find 3 manufacturers of whatever I end of specifying and 2) to clear up issue of galvalume vs. galvanized. HMMA allows for both. The doors and frames will be painted. Opinions? Thanks for any comments/opinions/assistance. |

From MasterSpecs-- The SDI standard, SDI A250.8, Recommended Specifications for Standard Steel Doors and Frames, describes four "duty" levels for door assemblies: Standard Duty, Heavy Duty, Extra Heavy Duty, and Maximum Duty. SDI products are called standard door assemblies. HMMA provides multiple standards to describe door assemblies: NAAMM-HMMA 860, Guide Specifications for Hollow Metal Doors and Frames; NAAMM-HMMA 861, Guide Specifications for Commercial Hollow Metal Doors and Frames; and NAAMM-HMMA 867, Guide Specifications for Commercial Laminated Core Hollow Metal Doors and Frames; these standards are referenced in the Section Text. NAAMM-HMMA standards for security-, acoustic-, stainless-steel-, and detention-door assemblies are cited in other Sections. HMMA products are called custom door assemblies. The Section Text specifies interior and exterior door assemblies fabricated to any of the four duty levels established by SDI or to any of the three NAAMM-HMMA standards listed in the Section Text. Where standards require the selection of optional characteristics for a given door-assembly type, this is reflected in the Section Text. By indicating locations in Part 2 paragraphs, or linking individual paragraphs to a door schedule, multiple interior and exterior door types may be specified for a single project. Most door and frame manufacturers listed in this Section can fabricate products to comply with the requirements of either the SDI or the NAAMM-HMMA standards. OK? |

Yes thanks very much. The web sites for many of the door companies do not talk standards at all, but if they can make either one then I can see why there would be reference to both standards in a section. What I need is fairly simple (not multiple types) so I think I will likely only need SDI extra heavy duty doors. |

As to the galv question, galvannealed (not galvalume) takes paint better than galvanize. See SDI 112 in their Fact File - http://www.steeldoor.org/factfile.php which states "The galvannealed coating has several advantages compared to the galvanized coating: 1) improved paint adhesion; 2) the coated surface accepts paint very readily without a pretreatment (a pretreatment will enhance the performance); 3) the zinc-iron alloy coating can be welded more easily; and 4) the coating is harder and more resistant to manufacturing processes." Hope that helps. |
