Lately, I have been struck by the volumes of good writing in the 4specs archives.
A good example is "Made Up MEP Divisions" that ran from May 5 to June 15, 2011 under Specification Discussions. Good, sound advice coming from several good minds, with an amusing smack-down of an absurd anonymous poster thrown in for good measure.
Thanks to Colin for providing such a good well for the specifying community to gather around. |

I want to "ditto" David's observation. I would like to build a college course using this forum as a text book. Participants are knowledgeable, write clearly, and are generally without unsupportable views or rancor toward those who are not in agreement with them, I only wish this forum had been available in the early 80s when I began my specifying career in Hawaii. |

One of my all-time favorite threads on 4specs - http://discus.4specs.com/discus/messages/3062/1660.html?1117212195 ("I'm seriously thinking of giving up on spec writing") -- what great rallying together of our spec community and supporting each other! and the pure eloquence of so many and especially, R.I.P., dear old Ralph! OH, and if we can ever get to the things David Axt, Doug Frank, and William were suggesting - think where we will be as an Institute and a profession!!!
Maybe it's one of the best threads here or maybe it's because I was a relatively new full-time specifier at the time and going through it like Anon. Well who am I kidding, 40 hours....meh! what's that? But what I like most about being independent now is NONE of my time is sucked away with the commute and the BS. |

"Why be a spec writer?
There are many good reasons to specialize in spec writing. When I mentor an emerging professional or speak to a new practitioner I tell them there is only one designer on a job and everyone wants to be that person. There is only one spec writer on a job and no one wants to be that person. Being a spec writer allows you to make an important contribution to a project without too much competition. And it is also a fun and rewarding part of the practice of architecture. I highly recommend it to all!"
