I need a specification (or at least a place to start on a specification) for a saltwater swimming pool. I have a pretty good pool spec for the standard chlorinated swimming pools, but am beginning to get requests for the saltwater type.

From the internet I have learned that saltwater pools make their own chlorine which they do this via a chlorine generator. This unit generates pure chlorine by passing the pool water (a saltwater solution) between titanium plates that are electrically charged. When the saltwater passes through this electrical field, a chemical reaction produces pure chlorine and some hydrogen gas. This treated (chlorinated) water enters the pool and within minutes kills any biological or bacterial growth. The remaining chlorine decomposes and breaks down with exposure to sunlight, and the dead biological material is removed from the pool by the pump and filter system.

So I specifically need a good description of the chlorine generating unit and any differences there may be in pumps and filters.

Peter: I suggest you read up at the Trouble Free Pool forum, a forum almost unmatched for the quality of the contributions (unmatched, except for this forum!) http://www.troublefreepool.com/ You'll find very specific recommendations about salt water chlorination equipment and manufacturers. You'll also find very good comments from some of the contributors at Amazon.com. Basically, you'll find people leaning toward Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy - perhaps in that order.
