Theft of aluminum gutters and downspouts from single-story buildings is a problem for some of my firm's clients. Does anyone know of a decent polymer-based gutter product that would foil scrappers? |

How about electrifying the gutters? |

You could always suggest hooking a 347V line to the the aluminum gutters & downspouts...you might even find out who the scrappers are then!! LOL Sorry, I can't comment on polymer systems, no experience. Ride it like you stole it!!! |

Dave and Paul: I do appreciate the humor! Unfortunately, the punishment has to fit the crime. Still looking for a feasible (and legal) solution. I am thinking that even a low-level criminal ought to know the difference between metal and plastic. Steel gutters are less expensive, and the scrap value is substantially less. Thing is, the one who is actually committing the theft might not know the difference until it is too late. Too, once a place has been identified as an easy mark, I'm afraid the chances for recurring thefts might be far greater. |

Several things come to mind. 1. Built-in gutters and downsputs. Retrofit and new construction. 2. Built-in gutters with exposed PVC pipe downspouts. 3. Video surveilence equipment with integtrated alarm system. 4. Aren't PVC gutters and downspouts available at big box retailers like Lowes and Home Depot? 5. BIG Junk yard dog. |

Yes, PVC gutters are available at Home Depot: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Amerimax-Home-Products-10-ft-White-Traditional-Vinyl-Gutter-M0573/100079740#.UdNFsZzJqKU Cheap and nasty, but you asked, David. IMHO, "a decent polymer-based gutter product" is an oxymoron |

Be careful! Plastic can warp in high heat climates like Palm Springs, CA or Scottsdale, AZ I know it holds true for the solid plastic items. |
