Dear helpful colleagues, I'm starting our first LEED version 4 pilot project, for commercial interiors. The new requirements look very different from version 2009. I need to completely revise my Division 01 LEED sections. The client gave me a scorecard, but not a schedule of values to indicate which product applies to what credit. I'm going to dive into this on Monday morning. Aside from increasing our fees, which we've already done, do you have helpful suggestions? Thanks in advance. - |

Lisa, you might find this downloadable calculator form useful. Instead of my plugging in the schedule of values, it lets the contractor do it as they procure the materials. Seems to be working on my current LEED Platinum project under LEED 2009. http://new.usgbc.org/resources/bdc-material-and-resource-calculator As for your request for additional fees, if I was your client, I would be disinclined to pay that. Just because you assumed you could use existing templates, doesn't mean the client assumes they are paying for cookie-cutter specs. Plus, you need to have a LEED 4.0 project under your belt so that you can market that you can do them. There is always a first project, and its rare that a client is willing to pay you to learn how to do your job. Harsh words maybe, but honest. |

Lisa - since LEED v4 is still only in the pilot phase and its quite a bit different from previous versions, resources and tools that worked for previous versions may not apply. If you're not already a participant in the discussions on LEEDuser Forum, I would recommend signing up there to ask specific questions as you move forward with the project. http://www.leeduser.com/discuss |

regarding additional fees: the client needs to clearly understand what the costs are associated with starting up a beta version of a LEED program that may change (again) before it is fully adopted --- and they receive financial benefit from being able to market that they are meeting a "future" version of LEED. (if there is really any value to it, the implementation of it should be cost neutral to the client after they factor in their increased publicity and marketing exposure. ) I would quote them a revision fee, just as if I were revising to use Green Globes or some other rating system. |

Thank you all for your support. I take my responsibility to create excellent LEED Division 01 documents and appropriate language for technical sections very seriously. For this LEED v4 pilot project, the institutional owner is both committed and competent. I hope we can get a meeting together with the Owner, Architect, GC, and me to address the new (and very different) LEED goals shortly. I assume many of you will be in a similar position soon. I'll keep you all posted with my progress. - |
