UL 10C Positive Pressure vs UL 10B

Everding, AIA, CSI, CCS, CCCA Senior Member Username: geverding Post Number: 650 Registered: 11-2004 Posted on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - 03:37 pm:    As a follow up to a recent internal discussion, the question was raised if UL 10B testing is now obsolete since the advent of UL 10C positive pressure requirements. The only Code reference I could find for UL 10B is 2009 IBC 715.4.2: "Other types of assemblies. Fire door assemblies with other types of doors, including swinging elevator doors and fire shutter assemblies, shall be tested in accordance with NFPA 252 or UL 10B. The pressure in the furnace shall be maintained as nearly equal to the atmospheric pressure as possible. Once established, the pressure shall be maintained during the entire test period." Do you know of any other reason that UL 10B would ever be required? My thought is that UL 10B may be still alive, but for all practical purposes for most architects, and specifiers, (and certainly for me as a lowly door hardware specifier since I am not dealing with the "other doors" in 715.4.2), UL 10B is now functionally obsolete.
