hopefully an easy question this morning...if i have stone (2 x 2 or larger) slabs, mechanically anchored to steel studs in an interior locations, joints are sealed or have metal reveals, can we eliminate any sheathing behind the stone panels? I would think so, but thought I would double check with all you experts! |

Is the sheathing a necessary component of a fire/smoke-rated assembly? Is the sheathing a necessary component of an acoustically rated assembly? Is the sheathing a convenient way to enclose an above ceiling plenum space or seal off an HVAC zone from another one or untreated space? If not, it isn't really serving any purpose. It might even be the spark that starts a undesired VE dialog to replace the mechanically anchored stone system with a thinner, mortar set stone system. |

The sheathing will act as a structural membrane for the framing system, and that also may be of concern. If engineered to be used without, I suspect no problems (other than those already pointed out.) |
