Any suggestions for specifying custom hand carved stone items? These are intricate designs to be used at a church. Not sure yet if they will be granite or marble. Has anyone prepared specifications for this type of item that would be willing to share or point me in the right direction? Many thanks!

Robin,

We rely on our local stone suppliers combined with a stone sculptor for these types of carved stone items. About the only thing we spec is the stone species and review of mockups. What are the items of "intricate design"? Perhaps a Cash Allowance is in order?

Just thinking.

There also might be a resource in firms who fabricate burial markers. They may have "the intricate designs" as part of a catalog and the equipment to perform these designs in any stone selected [part of your spec]-- perhaps by specifying a "model number" design would be all you need in addition to Wayne's notes.

Maybe this is best covered the way one would with other types of art. Include an allowance, but work with the owner to separately find and contract with a respected stone carver based on their prior work and capabilities. I really wouldn't want to put this solely in the hands of a general contractor for selection.

Are you insinuating that some GCs might award the stone carving to “Joes Auto Body and Stone Carving”?
