George A Van Niel

Age 83, loving husband to the late Mary (Toth) and Lucretia (Cuppy); beloved father of Tracy, Jeff (Nancy), Kelly (Paul) Stark, and Jon (Silvia); grandfather to Taylor (Ryan); brother to Thomas and the late Raymond and William; uncle and cousin to many.

Proud US Marine Corp veteran-Korea; a 1961 The Ohio State University School of Architecture graduate; Fellow and Distinguished Member of the Construction Specifications Institute, and namesake of the CSI Columbus Chapter’s George A Van Niel Scholarship Fund awarded to OSU architectural program students. George served CSI at the Chapter, Region, and Institute levels for many years. He was also a past AIA Columbus Chapter President.

A noted and award-winning specification writer, George prepared specifications for many iconic structures in Central Ohio, including the Ohio History Center, the Wexner Center for the Visual Arts, the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Crew Stadium, and the new Franklin County Courthouse.

George passed away on 27 June 2018 at the Veteran Administration’s Dayton Hospice. Donations may be made in his memory to the George A Van Niel Scholarship Fund, checks payable to CSI Columbus Chapter, PO Box 164052, Columbus, OH 43216, memo line: George A Van Niel Scholarship Fund or to your local hospice.
