The Orange County Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute is sad to report that our former President, John Regener, CSI, CCS, CCCA, SCIP, passed away last evening, May 31, 2017. John was a prominent specifications writer and a valuable member of our chapter. So many of us will forever treasure our friendship with John. His intelligence, wit and humor will be lost forever except in our memories. If you wish to send a card of condolence, use this address:

I met John at my first CSI Convention, in San Francisco in 1994. He was well-respected in the profession, probably best-known for his updating of Harold Rosen's "Construction Specification Writing".

He served on the SCIP board for several years, and was SCIP president 2004 - 2006.

John was one of my favorite CSI members to spend time with--great conversationalist, smart, opinionated (he had an opinion on everything), and a unique sense of humor that was sarcastic and corny at the same time.

I'll miss him. RIP my friend.

John was a mentor and friend to me as well. Though this news is very sad, it is not entirely a surprise. The past ten years or more has been on borrowed time. I think he joked that he was one good steak away from being toes up at any time.

John "discovered" me when I was a wee little lad working as a junior draftsman at a name brand firm. I probably asked him brilliantly thought provoking questions, such as, "why do we need specs?" Clearly recognizing my genius, he took notice of me right away and took me under his wing. I have enjoyed many, many, MANY interesting tales and sordid & sundry stories about the spec world, told in the way only John can, with that dry, sardonic sense of whit with a cutting intelligence and a point to everything he ever said or wrote. John was instrumental in getting me through the CCCA in the mid 90's, and has authored the largest, most comprehensive, and least challenged or disputed specification ever written for my firm, a major hospital tower project. We still keep a printed copy of it for reference in our library. It's nearly four feet long, multiple volumes, double sided, 8x11. It's awesome.

I have done amazing work with John, because he always made me do my best whenever I worked with him. He tolerated nothing less.

I will miss his lectures and laments about Word verses WordPefect, the Perils of Windows, the latent evil of short form specs, the muddy waters created by GreenSpec, Designers who don't know materials, and the indignant comment or two for those that just won't listen.

When it comes to things John said, I always listened. I always learned, and I always appreciated his investment in me.

My heart goes out to Connie

John was one of my favorite people for conversations at the national conventions. He was knowledgeable, challenging, and witty, all at the same time. He helped me become a better architect and specifier through those conversations and through his comments here on 4specs.

I bought Rosen's book at one of the Las Vegas conventions shortly after John's update was published. On a whim, I got him to sign my copy. I'm sure in the rare book world, having a signed copy of "Construction Specification Writing" is worth no more than a comparable unsigned copy, but to me, my copy is priceless.
