Does anyone have new information regarding the composite lumber decking? Last thing was a discussion of the lawsuit against "trex"...

Friends are considering using the material for decks in the north woods. They've heard about the mold problem and are leery. Should they be or has that issue - and all the other issues - been resolved and this is now the best thing since sliced bread? (and what was the best thing before sliced bread, anyway?)

I personally used Trex on my deck a few blocks from the beach; it's been 12 years and I've had no mold/mildew issues (and we did with "natural wood" products previously on most of the northern exposure). I didn't paint it - we used the smooth stuff with no grain and it weathered to a fairly consistent brownish/gray (I've painted my decks before and regretted it...and I SHOULD know better. A maintenance nightmare).

A neighbor just got a proposal for a new deck using Trex and we both did some web surfing...didn't come up with any problems.

I installed a Trex deck on my home in Indiana in 2002. I haven't had any major problems.

In one corner of the deck where it gets almost no sunlight there was some mold growth. But the mold was growing on the vinyl siding also.

I didn't paint mine either. I washed my deck with standard deck wash once or twice a year and any mold or stains were washed away.
