For tile substrates I have seem both "backing board" and "backer board". Which is correct? |

Tile Council of North America (TCNA) uses backer board. Sometimes getting everyone on board to use the right terminology is impossible. "Curtain Wall" versus "Window Wall" is an example where even an expert will manage to use both words expressing a single thought. In those cases I define them in the spec as interchangeable. |

ANSI uses "backING surfaces" when discussing the broad subject of suitable substrates to receive tile. But when they focus down to individual types, they refer to "cementitous backER units". You can tell this is my off Friday. |

In the 2010 Tile Council of North America Handbook (TCNA) it refers to Backer Boards for all CBU, Fiber cement, Coated Glass mat, Cementitous Coated Foam boards. I believe in the 2011 editions you will see it listed as Backerboard (all one word). |

MasterFormat really likes "ing" words such as roofing, tiling etc. |

I call it Tile Backer Board I don't like "ing" words like "tiling" or "Carpeting" Spell Check doesn't like "Backerboard" |

You DO know that you can add to the dictionary, don't you? You can force Spell Check to "like" any word you want...just be careful that you don't add a word that might be mistaken for something else later. |

Just got a new computer, so I'm rebuilding the dictionary. I'm sure I could have brought the old one forward, but it's too late now. I forgot how funny some of the suggestions are! |
