Don't ask me why, but I have a client who wants to cover an existing flat seam and standing seam copper roof with something fluid or spray applied. The copper was previously coated with something called Lexanite (spellcheck?). I don't know anything about the roof slope. He'd like the final product to be dull silver or gray colored.

Sounds like a job for some miracle product called "Roof-Goop"
Suggestions anyone?

Lisa,

Be careful with fictional names for miracle products -grin! Someone might think you are serious.

Actually there are several Roof Goop products out there from google's search.

PPG has a product called "Coraflon" which I have successfully used in southern California to repaint existing preformed metal siding/roofing

Coraflon is a paint, great paint, but a paint. Its the air dry version of the Megaflon, which is the next generation of pvfd. So, think of it as a very good coating that can be applied to a variety of metal (and non-metal) substrates akin to a 'kynar' based coating.

Its going to need a primer and its going to need good surface preparation. Its not going to be happy dealing with this other existing coating that was put on it earlier.

I have several high 15 plus story buildings that had late 1960s porcelain coated steel panels, anodized aluminum framing and 'other' coatings on their panels and curtain wall framing and architectural louvers that I did with Coraflon about 6 years ago now. Performing great today.

Not so sure about going over the 'lexanite' though.

That's an issue Lisa will have to take up with PPG, but they have some really good technical people who may be able to help.

I'm thinking that some fluid-applied roofing product manufacturer has a product that will stick to almost anything. Maybe Henry? It's not the kind of thing I usually do. Do you have a good roof consultant to recommend?

How about a Roof Traffic Coating, Neogard has several products that might work, try talking to them.

I assume that the client is not looking for "paint" but something that can provide a durable barrier against water intrusion, correct? PPG coatings won't do this (although they will look nice).

I recommend a a polyester resin roofing/waterproofing coating be applied over the existing metal roofing - Kemperol by Kemper System is the one I specify for these types of situations. Here is a link to projects similar to yours that have used this system with great success:

Tremco also manufactures products for metal roof restoration.

In years past they provided a custom color to the City of San Francisco that imitated the green verdigris color of aged copper for the historic civic center buildings.

There are several good manufacturers with high-quality coatings. Both Neogard and Sealoflex come to mind. As with any project, selecting the correct product and having it applied by an approved applicator are the keys to success. Let me know if I can help.

Garland also has some coatings specifically designed for this purpose.
