Good Morning

I am working with a client who intends to use a 100% acrylic polymer coating system over an existing exposed fastener, lap-seam metal roof – southern environment…..hurricanes, heat and humidity.

I was unable to locate anything that resembles such a specification through some of the larger roofing manufacturers. Is this a common product used and is it time tested? Are there many manufacturers out there that offer this product?

Thanks for your time

Russell:

We need more information to be of any help. What is the overall objective: ...cosmetic? ...waterproofing? What is the type of metal [galv steel, alum, terne] and what is the existing coating? How old is the system? You say the system is lap-seam but are the seams continuously sealed? What is the underlayment?

More than likely your best choice is going to be a high-performance paint coating [like Tnemec] over a properly prepared substrate.

The problem of going digital! I had a product that we used on our sports stadium in the 90's that meets your discription, but my catalgue file have long gone as is my cognitive system. Both were to be replaced by a computer, but that was a forlorn hope.
I can tell you that it was a short term fix as a waterproofer. Metal moves way too much to assume it will be water tight. On the other hand it does reduce corrosion. An heavy duty coating will do the same.

313: Contact me at phil@specguy.com and I will connect you with a roofing manufacturer who can assist you in specifying this system.

The system consists of uplift securement, patching and repairs, primer, seam reinforcement plies and mastic, and a spray-applied finish coat. Energy Star-qualified coatings are available. Warranties of up to 5 years are available.

The Garland Company of Cleveland, Ohio, has such a system. They distribute all over the country.
