We specify W.P. Hickman as one of our approved roofing mfr for mod-bit membranes. We've just recently heard that W.P. Hickman is out of business. Has anyone else heard this?

Russel,

Isn't W.P. Hickman's sole business the manufacturer of perimeter edge metal for commercial roofs?

W. P. Hickman Systems [Ohio], is not the sheet metal manufacturer W. P. Hickman Company [North Carolina]. Hickman roofing filed for bankruptcy at the end of 2008. Google "Hickman Roofing Bankruptcy"

October 7, 2008, Naples Daily News staff report

W.P. Hickman Systems Inc., a subsidiary of Serefex Corp. in Naples, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Hickman and two of its wholly owned subsidiaries filed the petition for reorganization on Oct. 2.

Hickman could not pay off the remaining balance on a $5 million revolving loan from FirstMerit Bank N.A. and failed to get it refinanced “due to the deeply troubled credit market,” according to the filing. The company still owes $3 million and it “believes that FirstMerit intends to aggressively pursue all of its available legal remedies,” including appointing a receiver and liquidating Hickman’s assets.

More stuff from the Naples Daily News,

Hickman has been operating profitably for four months, according to the filing.

Adding to the “financial stress,” the company’s new ownership and management have “uncovered certain accounting irregularities and potentially fraudulent activities in excess of $5 million by former insiders and subordinated debt holders of Hickman.” Lawsuits against the insiders are pending.

Serefex, a publicly-traded company, acquired a majority stake in Hickman in late 2007 to establish a national footprint. At the time, the local company was making most of its money from its Fridge Tape, which is sticky on one side and has a magnet on the other, making it easy to hang photos, coupons and kid’s masterpieces on the refrigerator.

We don't specify Hickman (Roofing) due to their tendency to go around the architect and sell directly to the facility owner in a sole source proprietary specification. This has posed some problems with compliance with public bidding statutes for school facility owners in our state. I hope they may change how they go to market. We've never had a Hickman roofing rep call on us.

We do frequently include Hickman coping and roof edge metal systems in our specifications; they've done a fine job of educating architects on ANSI/SPRI ES-1 requirements in the IBC.

How's that again? Can someone give the precise corporate names and locations, and the product line each is in? I'm confused.

W.P Hickman out of Ashville, North Carolina has a fine, quality product line of roof edge systems.

It is the Ohio-based roofing systems/material company [by same name] that is apparently defunct.

The www.wphickman.com website currently redirects to the www.wph.com website.

My notes in the changes section shows that W.P. Hickman Systems had a name change to Viridian Systems http://www.viridiansystems.net/
