Can someone tell me about specs. for a privately funded project in Bahrain, UAR?
Can we use ASTM references? USA products?
I know it will be metric.

its up to your client, on a recent project we did in Al Ain Abu Dhabi we were allowed to use American Standards; we intitial specified only American products, over time we learned about 'local' manufacturers - lot's of Nepatism in the Middle East, for Green Building we had to specify to both LEED and Estidama, the later using a Pearl Rating system (data avail online). Don't forget about the paper size, we had to rework our margins based on the project standard. The best part about Middle east projects is learning about payment etiquette, if you are working independently, get ready to wait at least 8 months for payment, seems its not polite to ask for money from your client when your job is completed.

Jo,

Our client provided the guidelines for spec format (MasterSpec), units of measure, and local products. Many local products sources are strategically aligned with the typical US manufacturers (DOW, Dow Corning, American Hydrotech, Dorma (althoygh worldwide) etc and many US firms manufacturer in the middle east.

Some Arabian states will not purchaase from some EU countries for political reasons.

I just completed two projects in Saudi Arabia with 95% US reference standards and 5% EU or BN standards. ASTM used throughout. Also AWS, AMMA, ANSI, TCNA, SSPC, SDI, HMMA, to name a few.

We specified only LEED 2009 for NC.

Also used A4 paper size. This will confuse your printer. My printer wanted manual feed paper.

Unregistered Guest: My query was in regard to restaurants in a hotel. Was that yours?

Ditto...three "boutique" restaurant interiors (lobby, bar, rooftop) in SOM-designed hotel; FF&E and lighting "by others"; currently in concept design, CDs by June 2011, and Const Complete by 2013.

It's the same. Maybe we should communicate.
